TUMULTUOUS TIMES
We were still recoiling from the effects of the Canterbury earthquake, when the drama of the Japanese tragedy was brought to us through some of the most incredible television footage ever seen. Both countries have experienced incredible heartache and borne witness to remarkable examples of survival, courage and selflessness.
Both nations also face considerable obstacles on their roads to recovery. Japan's huge manufacturing economy has been savaged and international supplies of cars, machinery, parts, computers, electronics and componentry are severely threatened.
New Zealand has a significant budget deficit as the fallout from the South Canterbury Finance debacle and the Retail Deposit Guarantee Scheme continue to put pressure on government coffers and forecasts. Christchurch still needs to be rebuilt and there is angst aplenty with the EQC coming under severe criticism.
Meanwhile, North Africa is awash with rebellion as decades of political power is challenged by the oppressed populations of a number of states. NATO countries are providing military air support for Libyan rebels, Syria and Yemen continue to ferment, and oil prices have spiked.
And yet despite all this international and domestic turmoil, there are some encouraging signs.
The critical US employment statistics show that they are heading in the right direction and bringing stability to the market.
Prices for New Zealand commodities reached a record high in both kiwi dollar and overseas currency terms, according to the ANZ Commodity Price Index. For the first time since 1994, all 17 commodity prices rose in the month, led by wool and milk powder and with good gains from lumber, skins, beef, lamb, venison, butter, cheese and aluminium. "The New Zealand economy is poised to benefit from the increased rural income that will inevitably filter through the economy," ANZ New Zealand economist Steve Edwards said in his report. "Soft rural land values and strong focus on the balance sheet has curtailed the benefit to the broader economy. This will not continue indefinitely."
This month sees the introduction of a few legislative changes, including the 90 day trial period for new employees extended to all industries and a new, lower company tax rate of 28%. Both moves are generally regarded as being positive initiatives to stimulate growth and business development. The reconstruction of Christchurch has been predicted to increase building consents by around 40% which will be a major factor in the recovery.
And for our part here at ABC, we have had our best sales month in over two years as pent-up demand translates into action. We saw a fall in activity in January and early February which seemed to be in response to the natural disasters and a general sense of unease. This condition now seems to have abated as everyone takes stock, revisits their own circumstances and acknowledges that life goes on, regardless of the seemingly insurmountable hurdles that we are obliged to confront.
We have reopened our Christchurch office from new premises and are back in full swing, and everyone is brimming with anticipation and confidence. |

personalised business branding service |
|
The current pilot license is operating successfully in New Plymouth. Along with the opportunity to license this business nationally, there is the option to also sell the New Plymouth licence as a going concern or continue to run this from a new location.
Go Mobile NZ offers their clients a personalised business branding service on computerised, moving banners, located on all sides of a truck body. These signs can be illuminated from behind, for additional impact and for use at night.
Clients contract to the service for 3, 6 or 12 month periods. The clients’ brand is assured of extensive exposure on commuter arterial routes, at high visibility locations such as shopping centres, concerts, festivals and sporting events.
This service and technology has proven to be successful internationally for more than 10 years and a profitable New Zealand operation was set up in May 2010, in New Plymouth.
Currently the business returns an owner’s surplus of $50,000 per annum, after paying a full time driver $38,000 p.a.
The current business model lends itself to being duplicated in city centres throughout the country either:
- As licences offered to owner/operators at say, $80,000 plus vehicle.
or,
- By taking on additional trucks and employing drivers and commission sales staff.
The trucks are under 2.5 tonnes and therefore only require the driver to have a normal car licence. Light courier deliveries are also offered, which provides additional income.
The truck bodies are sourced from an overseas supplier and are installed on the vehicles locally. It is possible to either purchase or lease new or used trucks.
Modern web based GPS tracking is used to verify location, exposure and for vehicle tracking.
The website www.gomobilenz.co.nz and the ‘Go Mobile NZ’ logo are included in the sale.
The current owners live in New Plymouth and also have other business interests there. The location was an obvious choice to trial the service to ensure that it ‘works’ in New Zealand. Needless to say it has been very successful with very positive feedback being received from clients and from the general public.
Currently the business has two trucks, both are leased. The truck bodies are owned outright. The business only commenced trading in May 2010 and turnover is projected to be in excess of $110,000 for the first 12 months, which will result in an owner’s surplus of approximately $50,000.
The driver is full time and paid on an hourly basis. Hours are flexible to be able to cater for afterhours or weekends.
Proposed Licence Option
It was envisaged by the current owners that they would licence the operation to owner/operators in city centres throughout the country but due to other business commitments they have decided to offer the whole business for sale and allow a new owner to make the decision as to how best to further grow the business.
To this end they have prepared a draft Licence Agreement, defined suitable geographic areas and prepared initial inquiry documentation. This documentation would be available under Due Diligence only.
In summary, Licenses could be offered at $35,000 plus $45,000 for the truck body, banner equipment and GPS, all plus GST. Price includes setup and installation of the truck body and banner equipment. On-going Licence Fees could be $200 plus GST per week.
The Licensee would be required to provide their own suitable vehicle. There are also purchase or lease options for both new and used vehicles. A new vehicle cost is circa $49,000 plus GST.
Summary
This is an opportunity for a new owner to become the head of their own licence group, where they are at the ‘top’ and not answerable to a higher level. Or if not a licence then head a corporate group where they simply need to duplicate the business in other city centres.
There are no specialist skills required but clearly this business will appeal to a new owner with vision and motivation to steer the business to the next level. A sales and marketing background will likely be useful.
This is a proven business model both in NZ and overseas and there is existing income. The business does not need to be run from New Plymouth and could be run from a home office anywhere.
Seldom do opportunities like this come to market where a new owner has multiple options to significantly grow the business to a substantial level in a relatively short timeframe.
