GODZONE AND GREENER GRASS

We’ve all heard the stories about people leaving NZ to do better offshore and, while some achieve their ambitions, it’s not all bright lights and big cities out there.

First it was the European financial administration that was under pressure after Greece defaulted on its debts and required an EU bail-out.

Now the USA is reeling under a burden of over 14 trillion dollars of debt and was just days away from being unable to pay government beneficiaries, wage earners and contractors. In the last 10 years their debt has doubled while revenue from taxes has dismally failed to keep up.

Australia has finally succumbed to the global downturn and, aside from their minerals sector, is showing lacklustre performance. Property prices are declining across the country and retail spending is down. Sale signs are failing to attract custom and consumers have stopped consuming.

Meanwhile, everything at home is rosy with business sentiment improving almost daily and virtually all economic indicators recording positive results.

The $kiwi has soared in value. Exporters are struggling in markets where the $US is the currency of trade, but commodities prices are at historical highs meaning record volumes are being achieved. Imported products have never looked so good and manufacturers are gearing up, buying plant and equipment as cheap as they’re likely to for some time.

The Reserve Bank has held the OCR, signalling that the emergency cut of 50 base points during the earthquake crisis will probably be reversed in September with maybe another 25 point hike in the following quarter. House prices are mostly back to pre-2007 levels and some are at all time highs. Industry experts are saying it is again a seller’s market and that stock levels are at historical lows.

Where would you rather be? The NZ economic outlook is as good as any and a lot better than most. Business is booming, and with the Rugby World Cup just about here, we’re all brimming with anticipation. We'll showcase to the world what a great little piece of paradise it is that we call home.

Regards,

Overview

This business manufactures and wholesales products such as hinges, letterboxes and stools, and has been established in the market for more than 20 years. It also specialises in custom piano and butt hinges for commercial and industrial applications as well as other product lines including sheetmetal and wire products which add some secondary sales value.

The business produces excellent products with significant barriers for competition, and has the ability to earn profits consistently in any business climate.  Sales outlets include Mitre 10, Bunnings, Placemakers, Paykel Engineers, EDL and with up to 300 active customers in total. Made to order small volume products could be streamlined by the new owner.

The business has significant plant and equipment including a press and tooling for each item made, to save set up time in tooling transfer.

It requires approximately 400 square metres of factory space and is ideal as an add-on to a similar business or for an owner operator with a mechanical, engineering or sales background. Trained staff are available to continue production and vendor assistance is available for transition.

This is a rare opportunity to own your own manufacturing business supplying large blue chip companies with plenty of opportunity for you to grow sales and profits. With significant plant and equipment and high stock levels this business is very well priced.

homebased and part-time

Overview

The business is a cleaning company specialising in new home “builder cleans”, site clean-ups and the continued presentation of show homes for construction companies.

All parts of the business are documented and there are systems in place to ensure a consistency of quality and performance across all clients, jobs and subcontractors, so this will make for an easy transition period for a new owner.

Strengths of the Business

  • Lifestyle:  Currently run as a part-time business, this leaves plenty of spare time to enjoy the income with family or friends.  The Owner estimates he works an average of 15 hours per week in the business.
  • Home Based:  The business has minimal overheads with excellent margins.
  • Easily Relocatable:  The business is not location dependent and could be relocated Auckland-wide.
  • Documented Operating Systems:  The processes are fully documented, as are all the systems within the business.
  • Customers:  the business has established strong relationships with reliable long term customers and this ensures continuity of sales, prompt payments with no bad debts.
  • Top Subcontractors:  The staff are loyal, experienced and with a good team spirit.

The financial accounts show that the return to the owner was almost $200,000 for the year ending March 2011.

All staff are independent contractors. The business supplies the work and the contractors carry out the work to the required standard.  All are fully trained and several are very capable of training any future contractors, so a new owner needs only to be able to administer, organize and liaise with customers periodically, and keep contractors up to date with any changes.

The owner’s main role involves site visits and quality control, training of the subcontractors and following up as required. Time is also spent invoicing and processing payments etc.  He estimates that his time spent running the business averages to a 15 hour working week.

Hours are flexible and can be to suit. The business presently operates from a residential property and requires a small home office area. An unused bedroom would be ideal.

This is a well-run, profitable business and would suit someone with a mix of sales and marketing skills.
