Don’t Set Too High a Price

 

This is the most common of all mistakes made by people selling businesses, whether privately of through a broker. It comes about not from greed, as is often thought, but rather from lack of planning. Owners know how much they need to pay debt and retire comfortably from their business; however if no exit plan has been followed they realise too late that the business, if sold at its market value, will not give them the hoped for result. This is trying to avoid the inevitable. By putting too high a figure on your business you are dissuading people from even inquiring. If it is on the market too long because of an unrealistic price, it gets a bad name. Don’t set your price by reading the business for sale columns as a lot of those prices are also above market.
