EXCLUSIVE DISTRIBUTION AGENCY

This business supplies and installs the LeafScreen gutter mesh protection system throughout New Zealand through a network of sales people, distribution agents and contractors. It was set up by the current owner Deborah Alexander in 2001, and is the exclusive distributor for the whole of New Zealand.

Currently run as a home based business on a small lifestyle block in Clevedon, it could easily be run from any location with due consideration to the requirements of the stock.

The current storage, processing and dispatch of stock is from a double garage facility of approximately 70m².

The mesh product has proven itself with over 15 years of product use in Australia and over 8 years in New Zealand and is the longest serving external gutter protection product on the NZ market. It is sold and installed throughout New Zealand with established distribution agreements in Waikato, Coromandel, Taupo/Bay of Plenty, Wellington / New Plymouth / Manawatu and Canterbury. Sales leads are obtained from attendance at home shows, field days and yellow pages advertising.

In Auckland there are three contract installers paid on a per metre basis and three commission sales people.

The LeafScreen System uses a UV stabilised polyethelene mesh with a diamond pattern that ensures that rainwater is directed through the mesh and into the gutter, keeping leaves, birds and twigs out, whilst still allowing fallen debris to "blow away".

The product is manufactured to the highest specifications by an ISO9002 accredited manufacturer and, for water collection purposes, nine of the colours meet the requirements of AS2070 Food Contact Standards.

Sales for the year to date from April 2009 are up on the same period last year and annual profits are substantial (further confidential details are available by appointment).

The business is listed for sale at $525,000 which includes all plant, equipment and stock.

KNOW YOUR REASONS FOR SELLING

Part of preparing your business for sale is getting ready to deal with buyers and their questions.

One of the first, and probably most important, questions you will have to answer is; Why do you want to sell? How you answer is extremely critical and could set the tone for negotiations.

You should ask yourself the question; Why am I selling? There can be a number of reasons: poor health; family reasons; poor business performance; retirement; even burnout.

Many buyers spend time searching for the “real” reason for sale and you need to put yourself in their position – how does my reason sound? Does it sound sincere and true and not likely to be contradicted later? Most important, is that the reason for sale doesn’t create an image of desperation. No matter what your reason is for selling, put it in terms that do not sound as if you have no other choice. Don’t be afraid to admit being burnt out or having lost enthusiasm in the business. Most qualified buyers can relate to that and will appreciate your honesty.
